Beginning on the blistering forty two degree day that was January 7th, Imogen Douglass (11Je), James Humphry (11 Mi), Cara Humphry (12 Mi 2017), Liam Jacobsen (11 Jo), Charlie Wardrop (11 Ah), and Baelea Collins (10 Ah) attended The National Wildwater Junior and U23 Kayaking Championships on The Goulburn River at Eildon. During the three days of events on the Goulburn River, the Girton Kayaking Team competed in The Sprint, Classic (3km Race), Team Sprint and the Team Classic events.
Girton paddlers received coaching and advice from National Senior Team members who have had unrivalled success in Downriver paddling internationally and locally in Australia.
Individuals from the Girton Kayaking Team obtained some outstanding results, with some members of the team only taking up the sport in recent months.
James Humphry (11M) placed 1st in the Individual U18 Classic and 2nd in the U18 Sprint.
Imogen Douglass (11Je) achieved 1st in the Individual U18 Classic and Sprint, which ranked her as the overall National Female Junior Champion.
Baelea Collins (10A) won silver and bronze in the Individual Classic and Sprint respectively in the U16 category.
Charlie Wardrop (11A) took out bronze in the Individual U18 Classic event.
Thank you to our parents and coaches (Maddie Batters, Greg Cowling and Tony Misson – Bendigo Canoe Club) who prepared us well for the competition.
