If a School Fair is a reflection of the culture within a school community, then we are fortunate indeed. Blessed with a beautiful autumn day, the 2018 Fair was a great success on all fronts, thanks to the hard work of the Girton Parents and Friends, as well as many students, staff and parents who were involved. My sincere thanks to all those who orchestrated this wonderful day for our community to come together and to the many sponsors of the Fair, including the major sponsor, Fairbrother, a supporter of the Fair for more than 10 years.
More than 400 Junior School and Senior School students attended Anzac Day ceremonies in Bendigo, Castlemaine and beyond in their personal time, in school uniform, representing the School superbly. Anzac Day holds different meaning for different people with its permeable nature bringing people together in what is an evolving but long-held tradition in this country. History often ushers us into a common space and honouring stories – the good, the bad, the true, the legendary – that create commonality, is something that our students understand.
The Senior School House Cross Country event was held last week with Frew achieving a very narrow victory over Aherne and claiming the perpetual trophy for 2018. Some walked, some ran, many chatted, but most importantly, most students participated and did their bit for their House.
Thank you to Senior School parents who have participated in parent / teacher interviews over the last two weeks. Parents have a significant impact on their children’s educational achievements and by engaging in your child’s learning, you are facilitating effective relationships that bridge student learning between home and school. If you have any concerns at all about your child’s learning, the relevant subject teacher is the most appropriate first point of contact and you should feel free to make direct contact with that teacher at any time, not just during parent teacher interviews.
You will notice a new tab on the eLink newsletter called “Uniform”. As we transition to the newer uniform style, information about any new uniform items or uniform related issues will appear under this tab. Also on this tab, is a link to a survey related to the new uniform items, which was emailed to families earlier this week. Please take a moment to complete the survey and share with us your experience of the new uniform, good or bad, so that we can convey your views to the uniform manufacturer. We will also be holding a parent forum as part of a forthcoming Uniform Committee meeting and if you would like to attend, more information can be found on the Uniform tab. Finally, following parent feedback, the Board has approved a new sports/PE top to provide an additional layer of warmth to complement other existing sports uniform tops that are already available. More information is available on the Uniform tab of this eLink.
A publicity photo shoot for the Senior School production of Peter Pan took place last weekend with stunning results, which you will see within this newsletter, as well as on the School website and Facebook page. The snippets of rehearsals I have glimpsed in the Black Box have been incredible. Our students are fortunate to be involved in the compilation of a production that is comparable to a professional theatre experience and this particular interpretation of Peter Pan will be a show not to be missed.
Finally, the Girton Grammar School Board is currently seeking to appoint a new Director. Members of the school community interested in expressing an interest in becoming a member of the Board should refer to the school website for more information: https://www.girton.vic.edu.au/images/GGS-Director-Board-Member-June-2018.pdf
