Year 11 Politics and Year 12 Legal Studies students were fortunate enough to meet Lisa Chesters, the Federal Member for Bendigo, on Tuesday the 12th of June. She first spoke about the nature of Australia’s representative democracy, then spent a majority of the hour-long discussion answering questions from students. It was fascinating to hear about Australian politics, and the issues debated by our MPs, from someone who experiences them daily. Ms Chesters gave an insightful view on a range of subjects, including the Republic debate, and the difficulty of balancing party policy and the views of your electorate when debating legislation in Parliament. Leaving with both a pocket-sized copy of the Australian Constitution, and better understanding of our political system, all the students were grateful for the opportunity to meet with Ms Chesters.
