Our Annual Twilight Jazz Evening, held on Friday 12th October was a captivating night with music from the Girton Jazz Band, The Girton Big Band, Django Guitar Ensemble, the Xin Trio from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and our featured artist Ms. Monique diMattina.
Monique diMattina is a Fulbright scholar, singer, songwriter and regular 3RRR Radio guest. She is best known for her exquisite piano stylings, catchy grooves and for bringing popular music and jazz together. A creator and producer of six albums, singer/songwriter/pianist Monique diMattina lived and studied in NYC for ten years after receiving a prestigious Fulbright Award.
While in NYC Monique worked with Lou Reed, Bjork, Jimmy Cobb and a who’s who of jazz greats. Her 2013 album ‘Nola’s Ark’ was recorded in New Orleans with Cassandra Wilson, producer Mark Bingham, and an all-star cast of musicians from the bands of Harry Connick Jnr and Dr. John.
Monique performs regularly with Rebecca Barnard, Harry Angus (Cat Empire) and Clare Bowditch, is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne and teaches songwriting at the Victorian College of the Arts.
The event was well attended and showcased a great mix of our student’s performers, The Girton Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Josh McGuffie, Mr. Jacob McGuffie and The Girton Big Band. Past student Oliver Cox (12 Aherne 2014) and the Xin Trio from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) collaborated with Monique and a range of Girton students to provide an array of exciting jazz music.
Twilight Jazz was a delightful night of sultry vocals, up-tempo blues songs, wry, classical and jazz piano playing and the skilful exuberance of the Xin trio driving the event forward to an inclusive vocal performance for all in attendance.
