What does the Federal Budget mean for young people?

in Senior School News

On Tuesday 15 May, ten Year 11 and Year 12 students, studying either Global Politics or Economics, together with Mrs Kristenson, attended the Budget 2018 briefing and discussion session held at Ulumbarra Theatre. On arrival we were treated to a sumptuous afternoon tea and had the opportunity to mingle with students from Catherine McCauley and Marist Colleges.

The function was sponsored by the Rural and Bendigo Banks. Guest speaker was Michael Brennan, Deputy Secretary, Fiscal Group of Treasury and he was joined by the Treasurer of the Rural Bank to discuss and answer questions on key aspects of the Budget and to explain key Budget decisions, the process behind the development of the Budget and the relationship between Treasury and their political masters. Students took full advantage of the opportunity to ask pertinent and incisive questions which resulted in interesting and engaging responses from the speakers.

The event was a rare opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and to discuss key issues with those who develop the policies that affect our futures. We gained not only information relevant to our academic studies but also for life in the real word.
